Escape (The Piña Colada Song)

Thanks to the hit movie “Guardians of the Galaxy” Rubert Holmes’ song “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” is popular again.
In case you are unfamiliar with it, let me recap… A man is tired of his “old lady” and answers a personal ad to find someone to have an affair with. He fast-tracks the personal ad “red tape” by writing his own ad and setting up a rendezvous with the writer of the ad that had caught his eye. He did not give thought to his “old lady” since they “had fallen into the same old dull routine.” When the ad writer arrives, the man immediately recognizes his “own lovely lady.”
My children have been listening to many popular songs lately. This song is one of them. Now, the desire to raise them in a bubble and turn it off is intense, but instead, I decided to use this song as a teaching moment for my older boys.
Proverbs admonishes a man not to leave the wife of his youth. Numerous verses of the Bible caution against the adulteress, etc. How can this song glorifying adultery be usable in a Christian home?
You see, the heart is a deep well and one with understanding (and love and patience and diligence) can draw out those deep longings and dreams. If a marriage is to last, each member of the couple must chose to continue to learn about the other. They must not ever mock or degrade the dreams—wants and needs—of their spouse. Choosing love, exploration, fun, and challenges is the only way to keep your desire for each other alive. The feeling of love will wane. The feeling of excitement will fade. But, by choosing to make these actions an integral part of our marriages, we can take back what the sinful world would adulterate.  When we continue to study each other, we will find that the one we committed to so many years ago can still bring excitement, happiness, and joy into the routine days that we face.
